I Lift Up My Eyes is one of those rare gems that addresses real life emotions and hits compromise head on. Ann tells us her story through scenes of past and present, and it is clear she has a heart for her family. I found it hard to be separated from this book without knowing what happened to Ann, how she coped through all those dark days. I even became her as I continued to understand the dismay of being caregiver, watching all the pain and suffering, and the many rejections along the way. You can’t help but have a leg in each camp.Ann, married to a man fifteen years her senior, learns the true meaning of loss. Robert faces each work week with reluctance and he longs to retire. Ann is in love and blessed with a new baby, a new circle of friends and the drive to do a university degree. She helps with the family business, enjoys bookkeeping and thrives on the common ground she now shares with Robert. But as the years go by, Robert begins to withdraw and she can’t help feeling deprived. And she can’t help comparing her past with her present, one man with another.
Ann addresses most of life’s changes stoically, the birth of a baby, motherhood, the final years before the children leave the nest and a car accident. All these are possible with good support. But when that support comes at a price, when it’s too reluctant to notice and too weak to take the reins, she must face it all alone. And loneliness is torture when present in a marriage.
The overriding feature of this book is discovery and Ann’s reinvention of herself. I wonder at her frailty, her willingness to abandon real love for counterfeit. Or was it a foreshadowing of what was to come? All she’s left with is disillusionment and she prays for things she cannot have. Things God won’t give her - except a place to reflect on her life, a place where Jesus once walked. A place where she turns full circle and finds the truth. The author skillfully manages to convey a poignant story that readers can identify with, a story that will make you think. A story that might just stop you in your tracks especially if you’re about to make a life-changing decision.

I Lift Up My Eyes Jane Bwye 9781542722797 Books Reviews
This is a novel that tackles difficult subjects of aging, fading love and leading a joyless life. Ann has married a man Robert, 15 years her senior, when she is a single mother of twins and desperate for love and rescue. It is many years later that she manages to have another child that belong to the two of them and she devotes herself to that child. Now, all children have left the family home and she is faced with nursing an ailing husband whose smells and foibles cause nothing but irritation. She seeks outside interests to escape the home and her failing relationship with her husband and creates a kind of conversation in prayer with God to help her through this difficult time. It's there she meets another older man, Duncan who helps her recover some joy in her life. But this doesn't turn out to be the love she hopes will give her life new meaning. She must find that within herself.
The novel's themes at times seem similar to Anne Tyler's poignant novels that examine relationship through close observance.
